Message of the Chairperson
Department of Linguistics is relatively new at the University of Dhaka. Since it starts in 1992, the department is dedicated to ensure quality education on different aspects of language and linguistics. As a part of their teaching activities our young and energetic faculty, some of them are trained up with modern methods and techniques of this discipline as well as educated in Europe and the USA, are trying to elicit the underlying structures of various components of languages. In addition to providing theoretical aspects of the linguistic features of languages here we emphasize the study of Bengali and different indigenous languages in Bangladesh.
Though our department belongs to the faculty of Arts, we welcome students from different areas and domains of knowledge e.g. science, social sciences, business studies, medicine and technology. This is because nowadays linguistics, as a branch of human science, is trying to make a bridge among these disciplines with a view to getting understating the process of human language generation as well as its relation with other social phenomena. So, we are hopefully going to introduce some special courses on language technology, clinical aspects of language pathology and therapy, aspects of educational linguistics, methods of sign languages, language teaching methodology soon.
We believe that students graduating from this department, having taken the above courses and methods, will be able to get skilled to prove their potentials to the contemporary world job market. At the same time, they will enrich their visions to face the challenge of future world.
